Wheel Thrown Ceramics

learning a new skill in under a month and experimenting with vessel design

Tools & Materials:

a pottery wheel and lots of clay

Takeaways:

understanding that learning a skill in a short amount of time is always a challenge & a greater appreciation of form and function in vessel designs

In a three week intensive course on wheel thrown ceramics I went from knowing absolutely nothing about using a pottery wheel to making an entire set of ceramic vessels as a final project. Going in I thought it would just be all fun and minimal work. But I found myself pulling many late nights at the wheel and having constantly sore arms from centering the clay that often seemed to have a mind of its own. However the satisfaction of transforming sketches and amorphous lumps of clay into something with both utility and beauty made all of the emotional and physical pain worth it. Also it was nice to have lots of personal gifts to give to my friends and family.
